DNA doesn't always keep to its iconic double helix shape. Depending on the particular sequence, alternative arrangements occur. The promoter region (initiating activity) of the insulin gene has one such called an i-motif which has been crystallised (shown here) and the effect of different DNA structures on the gene's activity revealed, offering the potential for specific drug targeting for the treatment of disorders like diabetes
