Future Gazing

Where does science fiction meet impending technological advances? Is it on the moon, with a habitable lunar base? Or in our minds, with thought-controlled devices and telepathic communication? In one of his final interviews, the late astronomer Sir Patrick Moore discusses his hopes and fears for the future. Great change is on the cards, he says, but whether that change is for the better or worse is far from clear. Between the threat of global nuclear war and promise of immense technological progress, the potential trajectories of this planet’s future are impossible to predict. Where we go depends not on science and technology, but on people and politicians. Choose the right leaders and work together and the future is bright. And the best way to set us on the right path? Gather up the current world leaders and send them on a rocket to Alpha Centauri, says Sir Patrick.
