Intelligent Future

What is intelligence? Does academic achievement prove greater mental capacity than mastering a practical skill? For many people, a smart mind is one that has been fed on books, trained and nurtured over years of higher education. But what of the inventors, the artists and the builders of this world? For a life-saving new treatment to reach patients, we need not only the academic researcher, but also the talented manufacturers, skilled doctors, and caring nurses. As part of Strictly Science – the 10-day exhibition exploring the past, present and future of medical research currently running in London – broadcaster Melvyn Bragg discusses his vision of the future. As time rolls on and our culture evolves, he asks, will we come to value the makers of this world as highly as the thinkers?

What is BPoD?

BPoD stands for Biomedical Picture of the Day. Managed by the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences until Jul 2023, it is now run independently by a dedicated team of scientists and writers. The website aims to engage everyone, young and old, in the wonders of biology, and its influence on medicine. The ever-growing archive of more than 4000 research images documents over a decade of progress. Explore the collection and see what you discover. Images are kindly provided for inclusion on this website through the generosity of scientists across the globe.
