Skin is a complex tissue with many cell types and many nerves. This study using multiplex imaging (multiple different proteins revealed iteratively with multiple fluorescent tags; IBEX – as shown here) and gene activity tracking including in single cells, shows that when acutely wounded, the skin's nerves play a major role in repair. Forming a niche at the wound, glia – the nervous system's non-neuronal support cells – regulate the repairing cells macrophages and fibroblasts being brought to the site to heal early in the process
