Only 5% of Nobel Laureates are women. Dorothy Hodgkin is the only British female ever to win a Nobel Prize for science. The Medical Research Council boasts 29 Nobel prize winners, all male, but the organisation is addressing the underrepresentation of women scientist leaders by pioneering a science-heirloom scheme to promote women in science. Dame Sally Davies was awarded a jewellery heirloom on the centenary of International Women's Day last year, just after she became the first female Chief Medical Officer for England. Today she passes her heirloom on to Dr Nicole Soranzo, whose research team are actively scouring the human genome to identify the genetic components of cardiovascular disease, today's leading global killer. Nicole and ten other heirloom recipients will pass on their jewellery to women scientists they would like to promote in 2014.

BPoD stands for Biomedical Picture of the Day. Managed by the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences until Jul 2023, it is now run independently by a dedicated team of scientists and writers. The website aims to engage everyone, young and old, in the wonders of biology, and its influence on medicine. The ever-growing archive of more than 4000 research images documents over a decade of progress. Explore the collection and see what you discover. Images are kindly provided for inclusion on this website through the generosity of scientists across the globe.
BPoD is also available in Catalan at www.bpod.cat with translations by the University of Valencia.
