Long Distance Information

DNA isn't end-to-end genes encoding proteins – in between the gene codes are non-coding regulatory elements , including some that play vital roles in when genes are 'read-off'. But identifying their unique codes among the permutations of 'ATGC' (letters representing the four DNA nucleotide bases) is a challenge because they may be sited quite a distance from the gene on which they act. Using a shrimp-like crustacean Parhyale hawaiensis as a model with a genome of similar size to ours, here researchers have developed a method combining bulk with single-nucleus sequencing to identify such cis-regulatory elements genome-wide

What is BPoD?

BPoD stands for Biomedical Picture of the Day. Managed by the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences until Jul 2023, it is now run independently by a dedicated team of scientists and writers. The website aims to engage everyone, young and old, in the wonders of biology, and its influence on medicine. The ever-growing archive of more than 4000 research images documents over a decade of progress. Explore the collection and see what you discover. Images are kindly provided for inclusion on this website through the generosity of scientists across the globe.
