Details revealed of the relationship between the macrophages and sensory nerves of the skin

Lifelong Support

This is the study of a relationship that lasts a lifetime, but is just skin-deep. The sensory nerves that help us feel everything from a soft caress to a brutal cut are supported by specialised versions of immune cells called macrophages. But the processes that establish and maintain this relationship aren’t well understood. To investigate where the macrophages come from, and how they specialise to this particular role, researchers tracked the cells, probed their genetics, and ran experiments in the lab. They discovered that a molecule called TGF-β activates when in contact with the nerves and influences the macrophage identity and function, helping to recruit them (yellow around an injury to a mouse ear, pictured) to aid with repair and regeneration. In this way, nerves aren’t just sensing the world, they’re also shaping their own protection network.

What is BPoD?

BPoD stands for Biomedical Picture of the Day. Managed by the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences until Jul 2023, it is now run independently by a dedicated team of scientists and writers. The website aims to engage everyone, young and old, in the wonders of biology, and its influence on medicine. The ever-growing archive of more than 4000 research images documents over a decade of progress. Explore the collection and see what you discover. Images are kindly provided for inclusion on this website through the generosity of scientists across the globe.
