A treatment called CSF-1R inhibition for the aggressive brain tumour glioblastoma showed promise in experiments in mice but tumours recurred, and from regions adjacent to scarring or fibrosis. This study analyses the genetic and molecular characteristics of the tumour, its microenvironment and regions of fibrosis after treatment in tissues from patients and experimental models and finds the fibrotic response potentiates the recurrence
