Complex bodies have organs each with a discrete function, a specialist tissue composed of cells. And within each cell there's a variety of vital 'organs' too – called organelles. One, the endoplasmic reticulum makes the lipids that will go on to become a major part of the membranes surrounding other organelles. Here, using cryo-electron microscopy (which has near-atomic resolution) coupled with computer simulation, researchers reveal how bridge-like lipid-transfer proteins (like VPS13A ) interact with membrane scramblase proteins to transport lipids between membranes to get them where they're needed
